Review HÜTTENTAG 2025: The Steel Industry at a Turning Point – and the Role AI Can Play in This Transformation

HÜTTENTAG 2025 took place under the guiding theme “The steel industry at a turning point”—a motto that precisely reflects the current reality of the industry. The ongoing recession in the German economy, new uncertainties in international markets, and persistently high energy prices are placing substantial pressure on basic materials industries. At the same time, declining demand from steel processing sectors continues to weigh on the market.

Against this backdrop, one central question emerged: How can companies position themselves in this challenging environment—and what contribution can AI and other technological innovations make to initiate a positive shift?

Our Contribution: AI as a Methodical Extension of Proven Approaches

In their presentation, our consultants Jan Hecht and Yannic Labrot demonstrated how AI can be meaningfully applied in industrial processes today. The core message: AI in the form of advanced language models is not a replacement for established statistical or classical algorithmic methods. Instead, it serves as a powerful extension that ideally works hand in hand with these approaches—and in some cases even builds upon them. The type of AI that is suitable always depends on the specific task at hand and requires a clearly defined business objective.

We illustrated this through several practical examples:
AI based prediction models can reliably forecast mechanical material properties even before complex laboratory testing—an approach that does not replace existing metallurgical models but meaningfully enhances them. In quality analysis, too, the added value is evident: AI detects patterns in extensive measurement and test datasets far more quickly and helps derive causal relationships in a structured way. In other applications, AI models support production control by predicting process and throughput times, making bottlenecks visible at an earlier stage. Even in sequencing and production planning, AI acts as an additional building block that strengthens established rule based systems and improves the handling of complex planning decisions. And early generative AI applications in administrative environments—such as automated evaluation of technical documents or reports—already show how manual effort can be reduced.

Whether in production planning, quality assurance, or process optimization—AI unfolds its full value only when the operational purpose is clearly defined, enabling it to identify patterns, understand complex relationships, and support decision making.

Three Perspectives on Digitalization – One Coherent Picture

A particular added value arose through the joint session with iba and Smart Steel Technologies, bringing together three complementary perspectives on digital transformation in steel companies.

While iba demonstrated how essential high quality and reliable process data are as the foundation for any digital improvement, Smart Steel Technologies showed how data driven alignment between continuous casting and hot rolling schedules unlocks notable efficiency potential. From Bronk & Company’s perspective, we connected with these insights by demonstrating how AI systematically extends established statistical and algorithmic approaches—supporting both operational and strategic decisions.

The takeaway: Digitalization delivers value along the entire value chain—from data acquisition and process level optimization to AI enabled decision making.

What Contribution Can AI Make in Turning the Tide? – Our Perspective

For us, AI is a practical tool, not an end in itself. It creates real value only when it supports concrete business objectives—and when it is applied by people who understand their operational processes deeply. AI in the sense of large language models should not be seen as a replacement for established approaches such as process automation or mathematical optimization, but rather as a meaningful complement that can be combined with them intelligently. Especially in a period of profound change, it is crucial to rely on pragmatic solutions that deliver tangible impact.

Our guiding principles:

  • Achieve efficiency quickly.
Through intelligent automation, clear use cases, and meaningful relief in daily operations.
  • Secure long term future readiness.
With scalable approaches that strengthen organizations sustainably—strategically, technologically, and culturally.

In short: We do not use AI because it is fashionable to do so. We use AI where it demonstrably creates impact—efficiently, purposefully, and with a clear focus on driving our clients’ business success.

Let’s Start the Conversation:

  • Which tasks is AI already supporting in your operations today?
  • Where do you see additional potential for applying AI?
  • How do you decide which AI technology creates the greatest value in which area?
  • And are your AI supported processes working together seamlessly?

We look forward to exploring these questions with you. Please contact us at info@bronk-company.com.
